In contrast to some of the other themes that are similar to today's world, clothing is a major difference that shares little to no similarities to standard clothes today. While we still eat food that was eaten in Jesus' day, and while the usual climate in ancient Palestine can be found in the Middle East in modern times, people usually dress differently than they did back then, or at least that is the case in 2016 in America. In some places people still dress like they did in biblical times, but some things definitely have changed.
Typical women's clothing in Jesus' day.
Jewelry dating back to ancient times found in the Middle East.
Men wore a tunic made of linen on a regular basis. They could be brightly colored, like Joseph’s in the Old Testament, but they were usually plain brown or beige.
Cloaks were commonly worn during the day and then used as blankets at night. These multipurpose pieces of fabric could also be used for carrying things.
Bonnets and turbans were worn for protection from the sun, and people wore sandals if they wore shoes at all.
Women’s clothes “were likely to be of finer material and more brightly colored than men’s” (Roberts 115). Veils were also worn for the sake of modesty.
High priests wore more extravagant clothing in colors that were not usually worn or prohibited for the lower classes.
Before currency existed, jewelry was a way to trade and establish an economy.
There was a biblical law against men wearing women's clothing and vice versa: ""A woman shall not wear man's clothing, nor shall a man put on a woman's clothing; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God" (Deuteronomy 22:5).
Typical dress of many different types of people that existed when Jesus was alive.
